An Integrated Therapeutic Perspective
Because Art can when words cannot
I believe deep down inside our souls, we are all imaginative beings with the inherent need to create.
The Expressive Arts is an innovative tool for understanding our internal world, processing emotions and interpreting the world around us, resulting in options for all individuals to be able to benefit from the power of creative expression. EXA offers unique person-centred approaches available to everyone, including those living with varying physical and cognitive ability levels.
Learning to integrate Internal Family Systems with EXA enriched my practice, providing pathways for clients to safely and compassionately identify 'parts' that need attending to and integrating those Parts into a more harmonious Whole.
Witnessing the incredible power music has on clients convinced me I needed to understand how to blend music more wholly into the creative healing journey. Although I use music in all areas of service, I rely heavily on
Music Care when supporting individuals who are navigating life with dementia.
Throw in a generous dose of Love and...
The integration of these 4 elements is the foundation of my practice.
The Expressive Arts (EXA) is a unique therapeutic method in that EXA integrates many art modalities, such as (but not limited to)- poetry, painting, sculpting, collage, movement, dance, drama, music- and is not restricted to a single approach.
EXA is low skill, high attunement.
The focus is on the creative process, not the end product. It is a method for self-discovery that relies on self-expression.
Because every individual's needs are unique, EXA can meet those needs in ways a single art modality cannot. The wide selection of modalities can be blended together in ways that better satisfy the emotional requirements of an individual. This approach to health and well-being can create unique opportunities that allow people to better understand their emotions, thoughts, memories, and experiences.
Internal Family Systems
Just like a family is made up of different individuals with their own unique personalities and roles, our internal world is shaped by different parts. Each part has its own specific qualities, desires, and intentions.
Using IFS as a therapeutic approach can help establish a healthy and balanced relationship between the different parts of ourselves and the core Self. A compassionate and curious outlook can be developed regarding internal parts, cultivating understanding, empathy, and healing.
Through the IFS process, clients can learn to recognize and communicate with their parts, understand their roles, and ultimately transform their relationships with these parts. By cultivating a compatible internal system, individuals can experience increased self-acceptance, self-compassion, and overall well-being.
